MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team closed out the regular season with a 1-0 shutout win at Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 28) at CMU's Field Hockey Complex. The victory pushed the Wolverines' winning streak to six games.
Freshman Aisling Naughton (Goatstown, Ireland/Mount Anville Secondary) netted the lone goal of the contest at the 4:59 mark, beating CMU goalkeeper Anatasia Netto on a breakaway deep in the circle. The marker is Naughton's eighth of the season; she leads the Wolverine team with three game-winning goals.
Michigan outshot the Chippewas, 10-4, and outcornered them, 8-1. Senior/junior goalkeeper Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) stopped CMU's one shot on goal midway through the first en route to her fifth shutout win of the season, while Netto earned four saves in the Central Michigan cage.
The Wolverines will kick off the 2012 Big Ten Tournament on Thursday (Nov. 1) at Grant Field in Iowa City, Iowa. Seeded third in the annual conference tournament, Michigan will open first-round competition against Ohio State, the No. 6 seed, at 4 p.m. CDT.
