IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team took advantage of a redirection goal deep early in the second half to earn a 1-0 victory against Ohio State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 1) at Iowa's Grant Field. The victory extended U-M's win streak to seven straight games.
Junior/sophomore Sammy Gray (Wilmette, Ill./North Shore Country Day School) drove in a low bouncing pass from midfield into the OSU corner, where it was deflected in front, redirecting past Buckey goalkeeper Emma Voelker at the 46:18 mark.
Ohio State outshot the Wolverines, 6-2, and outcornered them, 6-3. Senior/junior Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) earned two saves en route to her second straight shutout win -- and sixth of the season -- while Voelker stopped one of two U-M shots on goal for the Buckeyes.
Michigan will face Indiana in the Big Ten semifinals tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 2) at 4 p.m. CDT at Grant Field. The Hoosiers upset second-seeded Northwestern in today's first round. Friday's game will be aired live on the Big Ten Network.
