ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey program and head coach Marcia Pankratz have announced that senior-to-be Jess Allen (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional) and redshirt senior-to-be Eileen Brandes (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) will serve as captains for the 2011 season.
Allen, a three-year midfielder/back, started in all 22 games for the Wolverines in the backfield this past season. She had the assist on the game-winning goal in Michigan's 4-3 overtime win over Miami. Allen also helped a defense that had six shutouts and a 1.71 goals-against average. In her U-M career, Allen has played in 57 games, scoring four goals and totaling nine points in 39 starts.
Brandes, a three-year back, also started in all 22 games for U-M in the backfield in 2011. She had three assists this past season, including a pair of helpers in the 4-3 overtime win over James Madison. Brandes also had an assist in the 2-0 win at Iowa. In her U-M career, Brandes has played in 48 games with 25 starts and has six career assists. She also is a three-time member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad, a two-time Big Ten All-Academic Team honoree and a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner in 2010.
Both Allen and Brandes helped U-M to a Big Ten regular-season co-championship, a Big Ten Tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2010.
Michigan will open the 2011 season by hosting the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Aug. 27 and Aug. 28. The Wolverines will face North Carolina (Saturday) and Wake Forest (Sunday) with both games starting at noon at Ocker Field.
