ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan field hockey fifth-year senior Eileen Brandes (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) has been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District Women's At-Large first team, the organization announced Thursday afternoon (May 17). Brandes was named to the NCAA Division I District 5 first team and is now eligible for Academic All-America At-Large honors, which will be announced later this month.
Brandes, who graduated from U-M in December of 2011 with a degree in biology and a minor in French, is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a two-time Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient. She also was a four-time selection to the NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad and earned the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award three times.
Brandes started all 22 games in 2011 as U-M claimed the Big Ten regular-season title outright and reached the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. The co-captain helped the Wolverine defense to six shutouts on the year, including 2-0 victories over Iowa (Oct. 1), Penn State (Oct. 16) and Michigan State (Oct. 21).
Brandes scored her first career goal in a 5-4 win over New Hampshire in the NCAA Tournament first round on Nov. 12. She also had a pair of assists in the 4-2 win over Indiana (Oct. 28), helping Michigan clinch the Big Ten regular-season title. In her Michigan career, Brandes played in 70 games and had a goal and 10 assists with a defensive save.
The only field hockey player on the Academic All-District 5 first team, Brandes also earned high honors on her biology thesis this past December. Athletes from the following women's sports may be nominated for the at-large team: bowling, rowing, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo.
