NORFOLK, Va. -- University of Michigan senior/junior Ainsley McCallister (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) represented the Wolverines as a member of the Midwest/California team at the 2013 USA Field Hockey Women's National Championships, which concluded Wednesday (May 29) at Old Dominion's L.R. Hill Sports Complex. It was McCallister's second straight appearance at the annual senior-level tournament.
The Midwest/California squad, which featured eight Big Ten Conference players, took fifth place after posting a 4-2 victory over New England/North in its final contest. McCallister's team earned a 1-3-1 record in earlier round-robin play. The Mid-Atlantic/South team captured the tournament crown with a 4-2 win against Team Pennsylvania.
U.S. head coach Craig Parnham announced the athletes selected to the Women's National Squad at the conclusion of the week-long event.
McCallister redshirted the 2012 season, appearing in just two games while missing the bulk due to injury. She started all 22 Wolverine games at midfield during the previous season, and owns three career goals and eight assists. She will serve as one of three team captains in 2013, repeating the distinction from last season.
She also competed with the Midwest team at last summer's U.S. Women's National Championships, taking sixth place along with fellow Wolverine Liesl Morris (Lafayette, N.J./The Taft School) and volunteer coach Maren Langford.
Michigan will open the 2013 campaign with a road exhibition contest at intrastate rival Michigan State on Saturday, Aug. 24, before officially kicking off the schedule against Massachusetts (Aug. 31) and Maine (Sept. 1) in Orono, Maine.
