ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan Board of Regents approved the schematic designs for a new field hockey facility today (Thursday, July 18) during its monthly meeting on the U-M campus. The designs, featuring new locker room and fan support buildings and grandstand seating, were developed by Integrated Architecture of Grand Rapids, Mich.

"We are thrilled about this new field hockey complex, and it's something our players, coaches and alumni will be very proud of," said head coach Marcia Pankratz "The University of Michigan Athletic Department continues to show its commitment to being the leaders and best in all 29 sports, and its commitment to field hockey is second to none. This new complex will be, without question, the finest field hockey venue in the nation. We are excited for what the future holds for our program and look forward to winning many games and championships at our new home."

The estimated budget for the complete three-part field hockey project is $13.5 million. A new 13,000-square-foot building, which will replace the current South Ferry Field Locker Room building, will house team rooms and lockers for players, officials and coaches, training facilities with hydrotherapy pools, coaches' offices and meeting space, a hall of fame area, a press box and broadcasting booth and a home for game day operations.

A new fan support building, similarly clad in the same red athletic brick, will be located on the north side of Ocker Field adjacent to the new 1,500-seat grandstand and spectator entrance and feature restrooms, concessions as well as ticket and marketing booths. It will unify and complete the project by echoing the form of the larger Team Center building.

Ocker Field will also be completely refurbished with new blue turf, a new scoreboard and new field lighting.

Construction is planned to begin at the conclusion of the 2013 field hockey season. The building and renovations are scheduled to be completed in time for the 2014 season. The project is part of the department's South Campus Athletics Plan.
