Wolverine Trio Named to Big Ten Players to Watch List
Aug. 21, 2014

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan field hockey senior Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hersey HS) and juniors Shannon Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland Shrub Oak HS) and Lauren Thomas (Aylesbury, England/Aylesbury HS) were named to the Big Ten Conference Players to Watch list, the conference office announced today (Thursday, Aug. 21).

Smith, a midfielder/back, has led the Wolverines with double-digit assists in each of the last two seasons, and with 25 helpers in her career, is just one away from cracking U-M's top-10 leaders in the category. Smith also posted a career-best nine goals last season, five on penalty-stroke opportunities. A major contributor on the U-M corner unit, she was named to the All-Big Ten and NFHCA All-West Region second team in 2012.

Scavelli, a forward, posted a career-high six goals in 2013 and will look to elevate her role on the Wolverines' forward line this season. In two seasons, Scavelli owns eight career goals, including one gamewinner, and three assists.

Thomas, a midfielder/back, has started every game since arriving in Ann Arbor and is a two-time All-Big Ten and NFHCA All-West Region second team selection (2012, '13). She owns seven goals and six assists over her two seasons, earned primarily as a striker on the Wolverine corner unit. Thomas, who has earned significant time as a sweeper, has also contributed to Michigan's 1.76 goals-against average over the last two seasons.

Michigan will open the 2014 season, its 42nd of intercollegiate play, on Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 30-31) at the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Francis E. Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. U-M will face host North Carolina at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday before returning the following day for 2 p.m. contest with Wake Forest.
