PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan field hockey junior Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School), sophomore Axelle Wouters (Antwerp, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe Antwerp) and freshman Shannon Scavelli (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland Shrub Oak HS) were named to the Big Ten Conference Players to Watch list, the conference office announced today (Wednesday, Aug. 22).

Mack, a forward, led the Maize and Blue with 17 goals and 37 points in 2011. She recorded a pair of hat tricks last season and five game-winning goals, including one in a win over Indiana on Oct. 28 that clinched the Big Ten regular-season title. She is a two-time All-Big Ten honoree, earning first team accolades in 2011, and was twice selected to the NFHCA West Region first team. After two years in Ann Arbor, Mack has 33 goals and 73 points in her career.

Wouters, a midfielder, appeared in 18 games in her freshman campaign last season, starting 12, and registered seven goals and three assists. She notched a pair of two-goal games, against Boston University and Yale, and posted a goal and an assist in U-M's NCAA Tournament opener against New Hampshire.

Scavelli, a forward, scored 48 goals and had 25 assists her senior year at Lakeland Shrub Oak High School. She was named a Harrow Sports/NFHCA First Team High School All-American in 2011, as she has helped the Hornets to three straight New York State Class B championships. Scavelli was a Section 1 All-State and All-League honoree as well as a member of the all-state tournament team and the MSG varsity first team. As a junior, she had 38 goals and 16 assists and was a second team All-America and All-Regional player by the NFHCA.

Michigan will open the 2012 season, its 40th of intercollegiate play, on Saturday and Sunday (Aug. 25-26) at the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. U-M will face North Carolina at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday before returning the following day for an 11:30 a.m. contest with host Wake Forest.
