The Michigan field hockey program welcomed a large class of newcomers -- eight freshmen and one graduate student transfer -- this fall. After three weeks together and with the academic year now underway, they are officially settled into life in Ann Arbor. Learn more about the Wolverine newcomers, how they got to Michigan and what they bring on and off the field.

What attracted you to the University of Michigan?
"It's becoming more and more popular for players in the UK and the rest of Europe to come over for their undergrad or masters. For me it wasn't so much the amazing facilities and great school program that U of M has to offer, but the coaching staff who I spoke with about possibly being a part of Michigan field hockey. Ryan Langford was my first contact here, and the more I spoke with him and learnt the values and goals of the team, the more I knew I wanted to be a part of it. When I was offered an opportunity, I accepted it without hesitation, and I know it will be one of the best decisions I have ever made."

How did you first get involved in field hockey?
"I actually grew up playing football (or 'soccer'), but we moved and there was a field hockey club just up the road, so I switched when I was about 14. I was very lucky; it so happened my old club was one of the most prestigious hockey clubs in the country and meant I got to grow up training with GB and internationally-capped players as well as a fantastic group of players who grew up there. Everything I have learned, I owe to them."

How has it been getting to know your Wolverine teammates?
"My Wolverine teammates are amazing. Although I get plenty of jokes for being the oldest member on the squad -- I have been christened with the nickname Grandma -- I really couldn't have asked for a better group of girls, coaching and support staff to work with."

What do you like about Michigan/Ann Arbor from what you've seen so far?
"I think I have eaten out at almost every restaurant Ann Arbor has to offer, apart from the more expensive ones that I will save for when my family comes to visit! I love the campus here, and a few of my teammates who grew up in Ann Arbor have been really wonderful and invited us to their family homes for dinner. It's also a big plus that Kroger sells Tetley tea bags."

What do you enjoy when you're not play field hockey?

What attracted you to the University of Michigan?
"I knew I wanted to come to the University of Michigan from the first minute I heard about it. When I came into town and onto campus for my official visit in January, I met all the nice staff and some of the girls. Marcia and her team had been so kind and warm hearted, and I just wanted to be a part of this field hockey family. Michigan is a beautiful place which combines tremendous academic opportunities with an amazing field hockey program and allows you to be successful in the future and in your upcoming professional life. It's a wonderful place to further your education, continue your athletic career and learn more about the world."

How did you first get involved in field hockey?
"I got involved in field hockey when I was seven. I played tennis in my club which also offered field hockey.
When I saw the training I was interested and began practicing immediately. I loved it right from the beginning."

How has it been getting to know your Wolverine teammates?
"I was very nervous in the beginning, because I felt a little bit different being from Germany, but they were all so nice and open to me and have given me such unbelievable support. Everybody has a different character and all of them are special and unique in their own way. It was very exciting to meet all the new American girls."

What do you like about Michigan/Ann Arbor from what you've seen so far?
"I really like Ann Arbor. It's my first time in the States, so I've just seen Detroit and Ann Arbor so far. Ann Arbor is a nice town, and I am so comfortable here. It is very cosmopolitan, but has a small-town feel as well. I was here for the summer and got to explore many things. I really like the Arb, the beautiful campus, its buildings, the Diag and downtown with all the restaurants and shops. I just feel extremely at home here."

What do you enjoy when you're not play field hockey?
"I really enjoy teaching German to my new friends and teammates. It's so funny to hear them trying to pronounce the words correctly and maybe gives me a little extra self-confidence due to my own gaps and difficulties in the English language. I also like swimming and riding my horse while home in Germany, because it's relaxing from all the stress in school. I also enjoy being with my family and my friends and traveling around Europe and the world to see as many places and cultures as possible."

What attracted you to the University of Michigan?
"The resounding school spirit attracted me. That the students, faculty and even alumni support of the school was always apparent and really struck me. I loved how everywhere you went there were Maize and Blue or Go Blue signs. The attendance of fans at even the 'small' sport games or meets impressed me as well. I loved how you could feel the excitement from everyone on game day."

How did you first get involved in field hockey?
"My mom forced me to go to my middle school's field hockey camp the summer going into 5th grade. At the time, I loved soccer and knew that I wanted to play that on the middle school team and even in high school. I hated the thought of switching or even playing field hockey, but after my first day of field hockey camp, I loved it and hated soccer."

How has it been getting to know your Wolverine teammates?
