PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Aisling Naughton (Goatstown, Ireland/Mount Anville Secondary) of the University of Michigan field hockey team was selected as the Big Ten Conference's Freshman of the Week after scoring a pair of weekend goals, the league office announced Tuesday (Sept. 18). The weekly honor is the first for the Wolverines this season.
Naughton notched a goal in each of Michigan's home victories against Saint Louis and No. 23 Fairfield (Sept. 15-16), contributing to big second-half offensive performances in both contests. She chipped in a pass from fellow freshman Taryn Mark (West Vancouver, B.C./West Vancouver Secondary) along the left goalpost against SLU and converted on a diving shot in front of the cage to score late. She also tallied a second-half assist -- the first of her career -- against Fairfield.
Naughton currently ranks third among Michigan's scoring leaders with three goals, an assist and seven points on the season. She is one of four Wolverine rookies to boast a goal already this season.
The Wolverines return to the road this weekend, traveling to Lewisburg, Pa., to face Bucknell at noon on Saturday (Sept. 22) before kicking off Big Ten Conference play against No. 6-ranked Penn State at noon on Sunday (Sept. 23) in State College, Pa.
