PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior captain Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) of the University of Michigan field hockey team was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after posting five goals and an assist in the Wolverines' home weekend sweep, the league office announced Tuesday (Oct. 8). The weekly honor is the second for Mack this season and eighth in her career.
Mack netted the game-winning goal in the second half against No. 15 Iowa (Saturday, Oct. 5), completing the Wolverines' comeback from a two-goal deficit. It was her third game-winner this season. She also assisted on sophomore Shannon Scavelli's (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland Shrub Oak HS) game-tying marker late in the first half.
The Wolverine captain boasted a career-best four goals the next day against Ball State (Sunday, Oct. 6), recording three unassisted tallies in the first half before adding a fourth goal early in the second frame. It is the most for a Wolverine player since Jessica Blake netted four against Central Michigan on Sept. 17, 2004. It is also Mack's seventh career hat trick.
With the five-goal weekend effort, Mack upped her career goal tally to 66 and moved into second place among U-M's career goals leaders, passing Mary Callam (64, 1976-79). She is just two goals shy of program record holder April Fronzoni (68, 2000-03). With 151 career points, Mack is also just four points shy of record-holder Fronzoni (155).
It is her fourth Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week accolade. She also boasted four conference Freshman of the Week honors in 2010.
The Wolverines will face a pair of intrastate rivals next weekend, traveling to East Lansing, Mich., to play Michigan State at 3 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 11) before returning home to meet Central Michigan at 1 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 13) at Ocker Field.
