Lauren Thomas (L) and Haley Jones
Oct. 30, 2012
PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior/junior goalkeeper Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and freshman Lauren Thomas (Aylesbury, England/Aylesbury HS) of the University of Michigan field hockey team netted a pair of Big Ten Conference weekly awards in recognition of their play in the Wolverines' road victories in final regular-season weekend, the league office announced Tuesday (Oct. 30). Jones earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Thomas was named the conference's Freshman of the Week.
Jones allowed just one goal through 140 minutes of play en route to road wins against Iowa (Oct. 26) and Central Michigan (Oct. 28). Jones posted 10 saves against the Hawkeyes -- her fifth double-digit save effort of the season -- and stopped CMU's lone shot on goal for her fifth shutout victory of the year.
Thomas scored U-M's first goal in its 2-1 upset at No. 12 Iowa. The Wolverine rookie has boasted three goals over the last four games, including a career-best two goals in win at Indiana (Oct. 19). As a pivotal member of the Michigan backfield and corner defense unit, she helped hold the opposition to 11 shots on goal over the weekend and contributed to the Wolverines' shutout effort against Central Michigan.
Thomas is the second U-M newcomer to garner Big Ten Freshman of the Week accolades this season. Freshman Aisling Naughton (Goatstown, Ireland/Mount Anville Secondary) twice earned the distinction -- after her overtime goal against Michigan State on Oct. 12 and posting a pair of goals in U-M's wins over Saint Louis and Fairfield Sept. 15-16.
The Wolverines will kick off the 2012 Big Ten Tournament on Thursday (Nov. 1) at Grant Field in Iowa City, Iowa. Seeded third in the annual conference tournament, Michigan will open first-round competition against Ohio State, the No. 6 seed, at 4 p.m. CDT. All three tournament first-round games will be broadcast live via the MGoBlue.com All-Access player, while both semifinals and the championship game will air live on the Big Ten Network.
