FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team was unable to climb out of 11th place at the Big Ten Championships today (April 27) on the final day of play at the French Lick Resort's Pete Dye course. U-M earned a final-round 312 to finish with a 938 team total.
U-M teed off on the back nine for the third straight time this weekend and began the day six shots off a tie for seventh place. With three golfers at or below par through the day's first five holes, the Wolverines were in a position to move up, but high numbers at the front end of the day's second nine sealed Michigan's place in the standings.
For the team-leading fifth time this season, freshman Grace Choi's (Dallas, Texas/Woodrow Wilson HS) was the team's highest finisher, tying for 34th place with a 234 total in her first appearance at the postseason conference tournament. Her two-under 70 on day two is among the lowest rounds by any U-M individual in the history of the Big Ten Championships and tied for the second-lowest round of the weekend.
Just a single stroke behind Choi was sophomore Catherine Peters (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence H.S.), who closed a steady weekend with a 77 to finish in a tie for 37th. The final-round score for Peters tied with senior Yugene Lee's (Athens, Ga./Oconee County HS) final Big Ten Championships round for the second-lowest score by any Wolverine in the tournament.
Senior Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) finished in 54th place with a 235 total, while Lee tied with junior Lauren Grogan (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson HS) and one other golfer for 63rd with 54-hole scores of 245.
Senior Chelsea Pezzola (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal Prep.) rounded out the Michigan scorecard by shooting her best score of the weekend, an 81, and finished in 71st place, eight shots behind her pair of teammates.
Michigan will await the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships selection show to learn whether or not they have qualified for a spot at regionals, which will be played from Thu-Sun., April 8-10. The announcements will be announced live on the Golf Channel tomorrow (Monday, April 28) from 6-7 p.m.
