COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sophomore Yugene Lee's (Athens, Ga./Oconee County HS) opening two-over 74 at the NCAA Central Regional positioned her among the top 15 players as she led the University of Michigan women's golf team to a first-round 315 today (Thursday, May 10) as the Wolverines are tied for 15th after the first of three days of regional play at Ohio State's Scarlet Course.
After beginning the NCAA Central Regional in the afternoon wave off the first tee, the Wolverines will start the second round in tomorrow's (Friday, May 11) morning wave at 8:55 a.m. off the back nine. As they were for the first round, the Wolverines will be paired with East Carolina and UNC Wilmington.
Opening her second career NCAA Regional with a bogey, Lee added a second on the par-3 fifth hole to put her at two over. She gained a stroke back birdieing the par-4 seventh hole, making the turn one over. An opening bogey on the back nine was erased with her second birdie of the day on the par-3 13th, but her bogey on the par-3 17th put her back to two over, where she stayed with a 74 to hold a tie for 12th with six other players.
Returning to her hometown for her first NCAA Regional, freshman Lauren Grogan (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson HS) fired her fourth straight round of 78 or better, opening with a four-over 76 to put her in a tie for 29th.
Falling back early, Grogan bogeyed five of the first six holes with a birdie on the par-5 fourth hole, helping her to an early four-over tally. A sixth front-side bogey on No. 8 was erased with a birdie on the closing ninth hole as she made the turn at four over. After bogeying the 10th put her at a round-high five over, she found her rhythm as she went one under the remaining eight holes, posting seven straight pars and a closing birdie on the 18th to give her a four-over 76.
Freshman Linda Luo (Bradenton, Fla./Lakewood Ranch HS) opened her first NCAA postseason with an 81, putting her tied for 78th, while sophomore Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood HS) is tied for 107th after an 84 and senior Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) is tied for 118th following an 87.
