JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. -- Guided with sophomore Ali Stinson's (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) career-best performance and another top 10 finish from sophomore Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), the 20th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team earned its second runner-up team finish of the fall season at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate with an 885 54-hole total at Oak Point Golf Course at Kiawah Island Resort.
Playing in a slightly altered format at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate, the 54-hole tournament was broke-up in half with 27 holes each day rather than the normal 36 holes on the first day followed by a final 18. With the new format, the Wolverines opened up with a 300 in Monday's first round to put them in third in the 18 team field. In the final nine holes of the first day, U-M tallied a 146 to move itself into a tie for the second, just a stroke out of the lead.
Starting the second day of the play, the Wolverines finished the second round with a one-under 143 to give them a season-best and tournament best one-over 289 second round tally. Using that strong start, the Maize and Blue closed out with a 296 final round tally, but it would not prove to be enough, as the Wolverines finished second with an 885 team tournament total. First-day leader Campbell (298-290-294) held off the Wolverines to win by three strokes with an 882 total. Southern Methodist (304-290-294) was third at 888.
Stinson made the most of her final fall season tournament as she smashed her career-best 54-hole tournament tally by five strokes as she finished with a even-par 216 54-hole tally, helping her to a tie for third, which was a career-best finish and the first time she has led the Wolverines at a tournament. En route to the career performance, she opened with a three-over 75, but fired a career-best two-under 70 in the second round producing her first career under-par round. She followed with her second career red number with a one-under 71.
Broderick continued her sensational fall season, as she recorded her fifth straight top 10 tournament finish, tying the U-M record for consecutive top 10 finishes. She tied for fifth with a career-best one-over 217 54-hole tournament total. After carding back-to-back even-par 72s, she closed out the fall with a one-over 73 to help her to tie the record.
Freshman Isabelle Gendreau (St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec/Saint Andrew's School) tied for 34th with a 227 tournament total. After opening with a four-over 76, she tied her career-best single-round score with an even-par 72 in the second round. She closed out with a 79.
Other Wolverine finishes include: junior Amy Schmucker (Cold Springs, Minn./Rocori HS) tied for 36th with a 228 total (77-75-76) and senior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) tied for 42nd with a 230 total (77-77-76). Freshman Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) traveled as an individual and was 87th with a 250 total (76-87-87).
East Carolina's Adrienne Millican (70-71-72) took home medalist honors with a three-under 213 performance, while Nebraska's Merynn Ito (74-68-73) was second with a one-under 215.
The Wolverines have now completed its 2004 fall season. The Maize and Blue will now focus on training throughout the winter months. The next time U-M will hit the links will be Feb. 21-22, when the Wolverines head to Parrish, Fla., for the 2005 Central District Classic at the River Wilderness Country Club.
