The University of Michigan women's golf team continues its fall season with a trip to Austin, Texas, Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, for Texas State's Challenge at Onion Creek. The two-day, 54-hole event will feature a 12-team field and will be held at the Onion Creek Club. The tournament will be played in a 5-count-4 format with the Onion Creek Club set up for a par 70, 5,821 yards.

The Challenge at Onion Creek will feature a 13-team field, including Costal Carolina, Cal State, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Michigan, Miami (Fla.), St. Edwards, Texas State, Texas State, Texas Pan American.

The Tournament Lineup
Michigan will travel a five-player squad. Starting for the Maize and Blue will be senior Yugene Lee (Athens, Ga./Oconee County HS), senior Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood HS), junior Lauren Grogan (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson HS), sophomore Catherine Peters (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence HS) and freshman Grace Choi (Dallas, Texas/Woodrow Wilson HS). Senior Chelsea Pezzola (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal Prep) will travel as an individual.
Michigan has competed in three of Texas State's Challenge at Onion Creek events. Before not participating in the event last season, U-M had played in three consecutive events -- 2009 (15th), 2010 (t-7th) and 2011 (t-2nd). The 2008 event was held at the Wolfdancer Club in Austin, Texas -- where the Wolverines participated.
Expected starters Yugene Lee and Alyssa Shimel, along with individual Chelsea Pezzola, all have playing experience a the Onion Creek Club. Lee has played in two events during her career -- tying for 43rd (231, 2010) and tying for 10th (221, 2011). Shimel also has played the course twice -- tying for 56th (234, 2010) and tying for 36th (228, 2011). Pezzola tied for 43rd (231, 2010) in her only time on the Onion Creek course.
Lauren Grogan, who was one of two Wolverines to start all 10 events, dropped nearly two strokes off career-best scoring average last season -- from 78.73 to 76.87 (1.8).
U-M has been represented in regional competition by the team or an individual in 10 of the last 13 seasons, making team appearances in 2001, '02, '05, '07, '09, '11 and '12.
LAST TIME OUT
Michigan opened its 2013-14 regular season and the Jan Dowling era tying for ninth at Tennessee's rain-shortened Mercedes-Benz Championship in Knoxville, Tenn., and the Cherokee Country Club. Lauren Grogan was the top-finishing Wolverine, tying for 25th at 147, while Catherine Peters was a shot behind at 148 -- good for a tie for 32nd. Alyssa Shimel tied for 39th at 149, and Grace Choi tied for 46th at 150 in her first collegiate start. Yugene Lee rounded out the Maize and Blue starting five as she tied for 64th at 153. [ Recap ]
