Michigan Head Coach Bev Plocki
On Reema Zakharia ... "I was so excited for her. This is probably one of the best nights she's had in a long time. She's so talented on beam, but she is one of those kids that can get a little too wound up for competition. It was great to see her have success tonight. We know her floor exercise is awesome. To see her hit all three events tonight was a highlight, for sure."
On Talia Chiarelli and Nicole Artz ... "They're such a breath of fresh air. They don't take themselves too seriously. They work hard and are serious, yes, but they're also very fun and handle the pressure very well for being freshmen. I think that's a great example for our upperclassmen."
On the team's chemistry ... "I think team chemistry is critically important for any team to be successful and I think ours is very good. We have a group of diverse young women that all get along and respect each other very well. They're supportive of each other and that's very important."
On Austin Sheppard and working into the all-around ... "I see her making strides towards that, absolutely. If you watch her warm-up, you can see the talent and ability is there. What we're working on is getting her to do tha tin a meet setting. It's one thing to do it in practice, but it's quite another to compete in a meet under pressure. She took a short hurdle on her beam mount and fell on that, which was weird. I've never seen her do that before. I think she lost some confidence after that. But she is this close to being great. We'll keep working with her until she gets there."
U-M Senior Reema Zakharia
On her floor exercise routine ... "It's my senior year. The goal of the season is to put all the passion out on the floor in every meet, light up the crowd and make it electric. I want to go out there, have a good time, perform and entertain some people. In doing that, I got a good result tonight. If I can keep using that mentality, I think it'll be a good season."
On hitting her balance beam routine ... "It was the most amazing feeling. I love floor, but to land and nail the dismount on beam and get a 9.900 gave me chills. It was such an accomplishment for Shelby and I. We've been working really hard in the gym, so to go out there and do it in a competition setting under pressure was very satisfying."
On vault ... "Also very satisfying. Any kind of stick is a great feeling. I was so fired up afterwards. I sort of let that translate from event to event."
U-M Freshman Nicole Artz
On her first official college home meet and the team's score ... "It was so fun to be out there tonight. Exciting. Great. Fun. Indescribable. As a team, we got pretty excited when we saw the team score. I couldn't be happier with how we did for our first home meet."
