PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Junior Joanna Sampson (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) of the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team was named Big Ten Women's Gymnast of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday (Jan. 14). It is the first Big Ten weekly honor of her career.
Sampson scored 39.400 to win the all-around against Nebraska last Saturday (Jan. 12), also tying for first on floor exercise (9.925), tying for third on vault (9.800) and tying for fifth on balance beam (9.850). Through two meets, Sampson has six top-five finishes on individual events, including three outright or shared titles, and is currently ranked No. 6 in the country in all-around average (39.413).
The win in the all-around against Nebraska was her second in as many weeks, the other coming at the Cancun Invitational on Jan. 4 when she scored 39.425. She has six career all-around titles, four of them coming last season as a sophomore.
The Wolverines return to action on Saturday (Jan. 19), hosting Big Ten foe Illinois at 4 p.m. inside Crisler Center. The meet will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
