ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Senior Joanna Sampson (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) and sophomore Austin Sheppard (Murphy, Texas/Plano East) of the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team were named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week and Event Specialist of the Week, respectively, by the conference office on Monday (Jan. 20).
Sampson is named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week for the sixth time in her career. At North Carolina State last Friday (Jan. 17), she received top-two finishes on each event, posting an all-around score of 39.625, which is the second highest in the nation so far this season. Sampson won floor exercise (9.950) and uneven bars (9.925) and tied for second on both vault (9.875) and balance beam (9.875). She tied for career highs on both uneven bars and balance beam and was just one quarter-of-a-tenth off her career best in the all-around.
Sheppard was named Event Specialist of the Week for her vault, which she won with a score of 9.925. She also tied for fourth on uneven bars (9.825). It is the first weekly conference honor of her career.
Michigan hosts No. 23 Ohio State in the team's home opener on Saturday (Jan. 25) at 4 p.m. inside Crisler Center.
