PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Junior Joanna Sampson (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) of the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team was named Big Ten Women's Gymnastics of the Week on Monday (Feb. 4) by the conference office. Sampson finished first in all four events and set a new personal best score in the all-around in a win over Iowa last Saturday (Feb. 2). It is her second weekly honor this season.
Against the Hawkeyes, Sampson finished alone in first on all four events and in the all-around. She scored 9.925 on floor exercise, 9.900 on both vault and uneven bars, and 9.875 on balance beam to give her an all-around score of 39.600, a new career high. Her performance in the all-around ranks as the fourth-best score in the nation this season, trailing only Florida's Kytra Hunter (39.700), UCLA's Vanessa Zamarripa (39.675) and Nebraska's Emily Wong (39.650). Sampson is the third Michigan gymnast since 2004 to post an all-around score of 39.600 or better (Kylee Botterman, Sarah Curtis).
Nationally, Sampson ranks sixth in the all-around (39.460), seventh on floor exercise (9.895), 17th on uneven bars (9.860) and 24th on balance beam (9.840). In five meets, Sampson has won or shared 10 event titles, finished second in two others and has three first-place finishes in the all-around.
Michigan returns to competition on Friday (Feb. 8), taking on No. 20 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. The meet will begin at 7 p.m.
