ROSEMONT, Ill. -- For the third time in five weeks, freshman Nicole Artz (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday (Feb. 10).
Artz competed on three events to help Michigan stay undefeated in conference play in a victory at No. 14 Illinois last Friday (Feb. 7). She tied for first on uneven bars (9.825), placed second on floor exercise (9.875) and tied for fourth on balance beam (9.775). Of her 14 routines this season, all but three have been top-five finishes. Additionally, she has scored above 9.800 in 12 of those 14 routines.
The Big Ten first awarded a Freshman of the Week beginning in 2010. Artz is the fourth U-M gymnast in that stretch to receive the honor, joining Natalie Beilstein (six times), Brittnee Martinez (March 1, 2010) and Sachi Sugiyama (Feb. 27, 2012).
Artz and the Wolverines return to action on Friday (Feb. 14) when they travel to Lincoln, Neb., to take on No. 7 Nebraska. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. CST.
