PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior Katie Zurales (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) of the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team was tabbed Big Ten co-Gymnast of the Week on Monday (Feb. 25), the announcement coming from the conference office.
It is her first career weekly honor. She shares the award with Nebraska's Emily Wong. Zurales is the fourth U-M gymnast to receive Big Ten honors this season, joining junior Joanna Sampson (named Gymnast of the Week on Jan. 14, Feb. 4 and Feb. 18), senior Brittnee Martinez (co-Event Specialist of the Week on Feb. 18) and junior Reema Zakharia (co-Event Specialist of the Week on Jan. 21).
Zurales receives the honor after picking up a pair of event title wins at West Virginia on Sunday (Feb. 24). She won vault and balance beam, scoring 9.925 and tying her previous career high on each event. She also finished second on uneven bars (9.850). Zurales is ranked seventh nationally in the all-around (39.365 RQS) and is also ranked on balance beam (9.880 RQS, 7th), vault (9.880 RQS, T-22nd) and uneven bars (9.850 RQS, T-24th).
She has seven individual event wins this season (including ties) and two all-around wins (Jan. 19 vs. Illinois, Feb. 8 at Ohio State). Zurales has scored above 9.800 in 26 of her 30 routines across eight meets this season, which includes eight routines that were scored at 9.900 or above.
Michigan returns to competition on Saturday (March 2) for a 4 p.m. meet with in-state rival Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich.
