ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Sophomore Austin Sheppard (Murphy, Texas/Plano East) of the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team was named Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week by the conference office on Monday (March 3).
Sheppard receives the award for the third time this season on the strength of her three-event performance against BYU and Kent State last Friday (Feb. 28). She scored 9.975 to win vault, tying her career high that was set earlier this season. She also tied for second on uneven bars (9.850) and was in the official balance beam lineup for the first time in her career (9.775).
Sheppard is ranked No. 8 nationally on vault and has the highest average on that event (9.900) of any gymnast in the Big Ten.
U-M will return to home action on Friday (March 7), facing No. 6 Utah and No. 8 UCLA in a tri-meet inside Crisler Center. The meet will begin at 7 p.m.
