ROSEMONT, Ill. -- For the second consecutive week and for the fourth time this season, sophomore Austin Sheppard (Murphy, Texas/Plano East) was named Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week by the conference office on Monday (March 10).
Sheppard receives the award after posting a 9.975 on vault for the third time this season last Friday (March 7) in U-M's record-setting win against Utah and UCLA. With that performance, Sheppard shot up three spots in the rankings on vault from eighth to fifth. She also tied for third on uneven bars against Utah and UCLA, establishing a new career-high score (9.900).
Of the 10 times the Big Ten has handed out its Event Specialist of the Week in 2014, six of those have gone to U-M gymnasts: Sheppard on Jan. 20, Feb. 3, March 3, March 10; Natalie Beilstein on Jan. 13; and Reema Zakharia on Jan. 27.
The Wolverines close out the home slate on Saturday (March 15), hosting No. 13 Minnesota, No. 15 Penn State and Iowa in the Big Ten Quad inside Crisler Center. The meet will begin at 1:30 p.m. and be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
