PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Junior Joanna Sampson (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland HS) of the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team was named Big Ten co-Gymnast of the Week on Monday (March. 11), the announcement coming from the conference office.
This is the fifth Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor for Sampson this season. She shares the award with Nebraska's Jessie DeZiel.
Sampson won the all-around in a quad meet against No. 6 UCLA, Iowa State and California at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, Calif., on Sunday (March 10). Sampson, the second-ranked all-around performer, bested top-ranked Vanessa Zamarripa of UCLA in the meet, scoring a 39.575. Sampson also tied for first on floor exercise with a score of 9.950.
Michigan won the quad meet with a season-high 197.550 score. It was the eighth-best team score in program history and the highest road score since 2004. In addition, the score tied for the fourth-highest regular season total in Michigan history.
Sampson has won the all-around title in six meets this season.
Michigan wraps up the regular season next Saturday (March 16), facing Iowa State on Senior Night at 4 p.m. inside Crisler Center. The meet will be shown live to a nationally-televised audience on the Big Ten Network.
