ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Following one of the strongest meets of her young career, freshman Nicole Artz (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) of the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season, the conference office announced on Monday (March 17).
In Michigan's Big Ten Quad last Saturday (March 15), Artz scored 9.900 and tied for second on uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Heading into the postseason, Artz ranks first among all Big Ten freshmen on both floor exercise (5th overall, 9.895) and uneven bars (9th overall, 9.855) and second on balance beam (tied for 14th overall, 9.825). This season, 23 of her 31 routines have been scored at 9.800 or better, including eight at 9.900 or better (six of those on floor exercise).
Artz was also named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Jan. 13, Jan. 27 and Feb. 10.
Artz and the rest of the Wolverines begin the postseason at the 2014 Big Ten Championships, to be held on Saturday (March 22) inside Rec Hall in State College, Pa. U-M will compete in the afternoon session, which is slated to begin at noon. The session will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network and on mobile devices via the BTN2Go app.
