ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Five members of the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team received All-Big Ten honors, the conference office announced on Tuesday (March 18). Fifth-year senior Natalie Beilstein (Butler, Pa./Knoch), senior Joanna Sampson (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) and sophomore Austin Sheppard (Murphy, Texas/Plano East) were all named to the first team, while freshman Nicole Artz (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) and senior Shelby Gies (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) were named to the second team.

Individuals are named All-Big Ten based on their conference rank across all four events and the all-around. For example, if a gymnast ranks first in the Big Ten in the all-around, she receives 10 points, while the gymnast ranked 10th in the all-around receives one point. The gymnasts with the 12-highest point totals are named to the first team, while the next 12 are named to the second team (includes ties).

U-M has the most first-team selections of any team and is tied with Minnesota for most overall selections (five). Beilstein, Gies and Sampson are all repeat selections, while Artz and Sheppard receive the all-conference distinction for the first time in their careers. Fifty-seven Michigan gymnasts have combined to receive 127 All-Big Ten honors -- 100 on the first team and 27 on the second team.

U-M travels to State College, Pa., on Saturday (March 22) to compete at the Big Ten Championships inside Rec Hall. The Wolverines will be in the afternoon session (noon EDT) alongside Ohio State, Iowa and Michigan State. The awards for Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year will be announced following the conclusion of the evening session (5 p.m.). Both sessions will be shown live on the Big Ten Network.
