PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Junior Katie Zurales (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) of the University of Michigan women's gymnastics team was named a second team All-Big Ten selection, the conference office announced on Monday (March 19). The all-conference teams feature top-six performers in the all-around and the top six in each of the four events, based on the student-athletes' regional-qualifying average. It is the first All-Big Ten honor of Zurales' career.
Zurales, a junior tri-captain, enters the Big Ten Championships coming off two of the best meets of her collegiate career. Against Georgia on March 9, she won the all-around with a career-best score of 39.450 and tied for the vault and balance beam titles. She tied teammate Joanna Sampson (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) for first in the all-around last Friday (March 16) against Michigan State, scoring 39.350 while winning the balance beam and floor exercise titles. Zurales has competed in the all-around in all but one meet this season, and has set career-high scores in three individual events and in the all-around this season.
Michigan competes at the Big Ten Championships this Saturday (March 24) in Iowa City, Iowa. The Wolverines will compete in the afternoon session at 1 p.m. CDT, along with Illinois, Iowa and Michigan State. The Big Ten Championships seeds are determined by the teams' regional-qualifying average and will dictate which session each team competes in at this weekend's conference championships meet. The session will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
