ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's gymnastics head coach Bev Plocki announced on Friday (April 26) the signing of Nicole Artz (Holland, Mich./West Ottawa) to a National Letter of Intent for the 2014 season.
"We're extremely excited about Nicole and look forward to having her on our team," Plocki said. "She is a very talented athlete and a local kid who has a lot of potential to be a huge impact performer in our lineups next year."
Artz is a Level 10 gymnast and five-time J.O. National Championships qualifier who trains at Champion Gymnastics USA in Holland. She will graduate from West Ottawa High School an entire year early to join the team beginning in the fall. She was slowed down by injury this year, but won floor exercise and finished seventh in the all-around at the 2012 J.O. National Championships (Jr. D. Division). That year, she also placed second on floor exercise, fourth on balance beam and in the all-around, sixth on vault and eighth on uneven bars at the Region 5 Championships. At the same meet in 2011, she won balance beam and took second on floor exercise and in the all-around (Jr. C Division). Also in 2011, she traveled to Rio de Janeiro as part of the Region 5 All-Star Team.
Artz is the second member of the 2013-14 recruiting class, joining previous signee Talia Chiarelli (Boston, Mass./Lexington). Michigan loses seniors Brittnee Martinez (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty) and Katie Zurales (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) to graduation. Natalie Beilstein (Butler, Pa./Knoch) is also a senior but has an option for a fifth year of eligibility.
