Senior-to-be Sachi Sugiyama will be providing MGoBlue.com with weekly updates during her month-long study abroad trip in Ballyvaughan, Ireland. In the first entry, Sachi recaps her junior season, talks about designing the team's leotards and gives the lo-down on the trip.
Well, another season and another school year has come and gone, but I have to say it was so worth it! I can't describe how incredible it felt to help this team win back the Big Ten championship for Michigan and to be on the floor with my teammates at the NCAA Championships. We didn't finish the way that we wanted to, but I know that it will make us even hungrier heading into next year.
Our team banquet this past weekend was very emotional. It's always sad to see seniors leave. Our six seniors contributed so much to this team and have been true sisters to me. Knowing that I'll be in that same position one year from now is a little scary because it's all gone so fast, but at the same time, it makes me appreciate this experience that much more. I'm so excited for the new freshmen to come in and to be able to welcome them into the Michigan community as a senior. Those of us that are returning next year are taking this time to rest our bodies up, but we'll be back in the gym perfecting skills and upgrading parts of our routines before long!
Speaking of NCAAs, the leotard our team wore for the preliminaries won the "Loveliest Leo Competition" on Gymnastike! I'm so grateful to Bev for giving me the opportunity to turn my sketches and designs into real materials. To those of you that voted, THANK YOU! You have no idea how much that means to me. I am designing more leotards for next year and hope that they turn out just as beautiful (if not better)!
This week, I'm heading to Ireland to study abroad. I'm enrolled in the School of Art & Design and one of the requirements for graduation is to study abroad. Not bad, right?! I will be there for about a month with a group of about 15 people and one professor. We're staying in Ballyvaughan, a small fishing village on the west coast. Ireland has a landscape unlike any other. I cannot wait to experience the sights, the people and the culture. While we are there, we will explore the area, go caving, spend a couple of days on the Aran Islands and have a day trip to Dublin! I want to explore everything and can't be any more excited than I am already am to get over there.
I want to try my hand at photography while I'm there, but also to paint and sketch. While being there, we'll have to put together pieces of work to exhibition at the end of the month. I'll try to provide updates every week while I'm over there and post a lot of pictures, so stay tuned for those.
Thanks for reading! Until next time,
