Sept. 18, 2012
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Katie Zurales (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) and junior Joanna Sampson (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland) of the University of Michigan women's gymnastics team have been chosen as captains for the upcoming 2013 season, head coach Bev Plocki announced Tuesday (Sept. 18).
"I'm really excited about the amount of leadership that we're going to have this year," Plocki said. "I think the team selected two excellent individuals as captains. I also think there are two or three really strong leaders on our team that will also be leaders by example and lead in the gym, even though they won't have the title of captain."
Sampson and Zurales enter the 2013 season coming off breakout seasons from a year ago. Both student-athletes were individual qualifiers to the 2012 NCAA Championships after tying for the NCAA Regional title on vault. At NCAAs, Zurales earned NCAA All-America second team honors in the all-around (seventh) and on vault (eighth), while Sampson finished 30th on vault.
Zurales, also a captain last season, scored the highest in the all-around of any Big Ten gymnast competing at the NCAA Championships. She was named an All-Big Ten second team selection and earned Academic All-Big Ten and NACGC/W Scholastic All-America honors. Sampson won her second consecutive NCAA regional vault title and was also named to the 2012 All-Big Ten Championships team after finishing runner-up on vault.
The Wolverines finished the season ranked No. 13, the highest-ranked team not competing at the NCAA Championships. They return 10 letterwinners this season and add freshmen Austin Sheppard (Dallas, Texas/Plano East), Morgan Smith (Clermont, Fla./East Ridge) and Lindsay Williams (Northville, Mich./Northville) to the squad.
