ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- On Wednesday (Nov. 12), University of Michigan women's gymnastics head coach Bev Plocki announced the signings of Olivia Karas and Emma McLean to National Letters of Intent for the 2015-16 season.
"We couldn't be more thrilled to have Olivia and Emma join our program," Plocki said. "Both of them possess a high level of gymnastics talent and will be great fits within our team. They're also fantastic students who will represent our program and the University of Michigan with great class and integrity."
Karas is from Chicago, Ill., attends the Lain School of Chicago and trains at IK Gymnastics. At the 2014 L10 J.O. National Championships, Karas won three individual titles in the Sr. A Division -- all-around, vault and uneven bars. She also finished tied for sixth on floor exercise and tied for 10th on balance beam. She claimed vault and floor exercise titles at both the 2014 Region 5 Championships and 2014 Illinois State Championships, finishing in the top two of the all-around in both meets, including a win in the latter. At the 2014 IGI Chicago Style Gymnastics Meet, Karas finished in the top three of every event, winning vault, uneven bars and all-around and taking second on floor exercise and third on balance beam. She was also sixth in the all-around at the 2014 Nastia Liukin Cup.
McLean is from nearby Clarkston, Mich., attends Notre Dame Prep in Pontiac and trains at Stars and Stripes Gymnastics Academy. At the 2014 L10 J.O. National Championships, McLean tied for fifth on floor exercise and was sixth on vault in the Sr. B Division. She was also 16th in the all-around. At the 2014 Region 5 Championships, she tied for first on vault, tied for second on floor exercise, tied for fourth on balance beam and took fourth in the all-around. At the 2014 Michigan State Championships, McLean won the all-around and tied for first on floor exercise in addition to finishing second on balance beam and fourth on vault.
