Three Sign National Letters of Intent for Next Season

Nov. 19, 2010

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics program received National Letters of Intent from a trio of new Wolverines -- Annette Miele (Easton, Pa./Easton), Sachi Sugiyama (Keller, Texas/Keller) and Morgan Steigerwalt (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Bridgeway Academy).

"These athletes make up one of our solidest classes in years," said head coach Bev Plocki. "All three can contribute on every event their freshman year and two have elite experience. We're excited for the future."

Miele competes for Parkettes with fellow signee Steigerwalt. Miele qualified for nationals in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and was a junior national team member, taking 10th in the all-around in 2008.

"Annette brings a tremendous amount of competition experience from the elite level," said Plocki. "She has a high skill level on all events and this past summer showed how good she is at the U.S. National Championships. She'll contribute right away."

Sugiyama competes for Top Flight Gymnastics and took sixth place in the all-around at nationals in 2010, finishing fifth on vault. She was a 2010 regional vault champion, taking runner-up honors on bars and finishing fifth in the all-around. Sugiyama also placed fifth on floor and sixth on vault at the 2009 national meet.

"Sachi is a diamond in the rough," said Plocki. "She flew under the radar on some people's recruiting screens. We identified her early and she's gotten better and better each time we see her. We think she'll surprise a lot of coaches next year."

Steigerwalt also competes for Parkettes and competed in the 2009 and 2010 U.S. National Championships, placing 16th in the country this year. She also competed at the 2009 and 2010 U.S. Classics and was a regional beam champion in 2007.

"Morgan is another one of our recruits who has been competing at the elite level for a number of years," said Plocki. "She showcased her skills at the U.S. CoverGirl Classic this summer and possesses a tremendous skill level on all events. Her lines and presentation are fantastic."

The Wolverines debut at their annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad on Sunday (Dec. 5) at 1 p.m. at Crisler Arena. The event will feature celebrity judges and giveaways with details forthcoming on MGoBlue.com.
