ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the 15th time in the last 16 years, the University of Michigan women's gymnastics team will open the season with a top-10 ranking, coming in at No. 10 in the 2013 GymInfo Preseason Coaches Poll, released on Monday (Dec. 3). The Wolverines finished last season ranked No. 13, the highest-ranked team that didn't compete at the NCAA Championships.
Defending national champion Alabama is ranked No. 1, followed by UCLA (No. 2), Florida (No. 3), Oklahoma (No. 4) and Utah (No. 5). Rounding out the rest of the top 10 is Stanford (No. 6), Nebraska (No. 7), LSU (No. 8), and Oregon State (No. 9).
Michigan is the second-highest Big Ten team in the poll, second to defending Big Ten champion Nebraska. Other conference teams in the top 25 include Ohio State (No. 14), Penn State (No. 16), Illinois (No. 18) and Minnesota (No. 23). The Wolverines will face three preseason top-10 teams during the regular season, including No. 9 Oregon State (Jan. 4 at the Cancun Invitational), No. 7 Nebraska (Jan. 12 at Crisler Center) and No. 2 UCLA (March 10 in Los Angeles, Calif.). In addition, Michigan will face all seven Big Ten opponents this season, including four (Nebraska, Illinois, Iowa, Penn State) in Ann Arbor.
The Wolverines unveil the 2013 squad this Friday (Dec. 7) in an exhibition meet against in-state rival Michigan State inside Crisler Center. The meet will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
