U-M Student-Athlete Spotlight: Becca Marchant

Jan. 16, 2014

Following the signing of U-M's second recruiting class, all 10 members are being featured in a student-athlete spotlight, breaking down each future Wolverine, on and off the field.

Becca Marchant is a three-time varsity letterwinner (2011, '12, '13) and will play her final season at Georgetown Day High School (Washington, D.C.) this spring.

As a junior in 2013, Marchant bounced back from an injury, which kept her out of three games, and tallied 23 goals and 19 assists for the Grasshoppers. Following the season, she was voted team MVP and selected to represent Georgetown Day as team captain for the upcoming 2014 season.

The midfielder also participated in club lacrosse for the Future Elite Club Lacrosse. This past summer (2013), Marchant played for the Under Armor All-American Uncommitted 2014.

Collegiate athletics runs in the Marchant family as her father, Bryon Marchant, ran varsity track at the United States Naval Academy for three years.

Marchant was also a two-year member of the varsity tennis team (2010, '11) and competed in indoor track for one year (2012-13). During the 2012-13 indoor track season, she was a member of the school-record setting distance medley relay team.

Off the field, Marchant is co-head of the Without Borders Club, which helps raise awareness about third world countries with inadequate medical access. The club partners with Doctors Without Borders, and donates a great deal of money to the Red Cross.

What attracted you to the University of Michigan?
"I really liked the idea of being a part of a new lacrosse program on a big stage where our team could build our own traditions. I also value the enthusiasm and the great academic reputation that Michigan has, so honestly it was a perfect fit."

What are your thoughts about continuing to help Michigan build its women's lacrosse program?
"I could not be more thrilled to be a part of this Michigan women's lacrosse program. I think that we're really going to develop into a great team and continue the prestige of Michigan Athletics. I cannot wait to build traditions with this team."

What do you like about Michigan/Ann Arbor from what you've seen so far?
"It's all amazing. I love the spirit and tradition that the University of Michigan has, and the academic prestige is also outstanding. It is such an exciting and proud community and I can't wait to be a part of it!"

What is your favorite lacrosse moment of all-time?
"My favorite lacrosse moment was during my junior year when our team had a tough season but we almost upset the number one team in the division tournament. It was a blast because we really competed and played well as a team."

How did you first get involved in lacrosse?
"I played soccer and tennis for a long time, but I had never picked up a lacrosse stick until eighth grade. I had to pick a spring sport to play so I decided to try lacrosse to fulfill my spring requirement. It was by far one of the best decisions I ever made and I just fell completely in love with the sport."

Do you have any talents or hobbies that you're willing to share? If so, please explain.
"I used to figure skate competitively when I was younger. I still make my friends go with me to public rinks every time I get the chance. There are still pictures all over my house from competitions and my dad still has my medals. I also played varsity tennis my freshman and sophomore year."

Who is your role model, and why?
"My parents are my role models. They are always supportive of me. They have definitely showed me how to work hard and be resilient."

What do you enjoy doing when you're not playing lacrosse?
"I love watching football and spending time with my friends."
