ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head women's lacrosse coach Jennifer Ulehla announced today (Tuesday, June 4) the hiring of Alec Zimmerman as the program's director of operations. Zimmerman transitions to the director of operations position after spending the last two years as the U-M men's and women's lacrosse equipment manager.
"Having worked successfully with Alec for over a year as our team's equipment manager, it was a natural progression for us to hire him as our director of operations," said Ulehla. "Alec has demonstrated he has the skills, knowledge and work ethic necessary to be successful on the operational level of not only a Division I program, but also one that is being built from the ground up. Alec's loyalty to Michigan and enthusiasm for the Maize and Blue is unmatched and we are fortunate to have him as a member of our women's lacrosse staff."
Zimmerman has been a part of the Michigan Athletic Department since his undergraduate years at Michigan, when he first started as a volunteer student recruiting aide for football in 2008. After one year, he then served as the head student equipment manager for football from 2009 to 2011. In 2011, Zimmerman was hired full time by Michigan as the lacrosse equipment manager.
In his role as U-M's equipment manager he was responsible for many similar duties he will assume as the director of operations. He was charged with overseeing all equipment operations for the men's and women's lacrosse teams, which included budgeting, purchasing and inventory. He was also a liaison with coaches, players, and athletic department staff, assisted with travel plans, oversaw a team of student managers and helped coordinate all equipment needs for Michigan men's lacrosse camps.
"I am extremely honored and excited that coach Ulehla has given me the opportunity to work with the Michigan women's lacrosse program," said Zimmerman. "Having worked with the men's lacrosse program during their first years, I am tremendously excited to be able to contribute to Team One and the building of the women's lacrosse program. As a proud alum and member of the Michigan Athletics Team, the opportunity to continue being a part of the Michigan lacrosse family and a member of the greatest athletic department in the country is a dream come true. I look forward to the hard work ahead that will come with establishing the culture and traditions of the Michigan women's lacrosse program, consistent with the University of Michigan and the athletic department."
As the director of operations, Zimmerman will be responsible for all day-to-day office operations, which include overseeing all aspects of the budget, team travel and home game logistics. He will also supervise team managers, coordinate on-campus recruiting visits and events and manage camp operations for the Wolverines. In addition, he will serve as the liaison between the women's lacrosse program and other departments within Michigan Athletics.
The Lambertville, Mich., native earned a bachelor's degree in sport management from the University of Michigan in 2011 and is currently pursuing a master's degree in educational leadership-higher education/student affairs from Eastern Michigan University.
Ulehla was hired as Michigan's first varsity women's lacrosse coach on Sept. 8, 2011, after a three-year stint as an assistant coach at the University of Florida. Zimmerman will also join assistant coach Jen Valore, who joined Ulehla's staff on Dec. 23, 2011. The program will begin varsity competition during the 2013-14 academic year as a member of the American Lacrosse Conference (ALC), before transitioning to the Big Ten Conference in 2015, as it was announced yesterday (Monday, June 3) by the conference. The program's first recruiting class was announced on Nov. 21, 2012, and will feature 28 incoming freshmen from 10 different states across the country.
