ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's lacrosse head coach Jennifer Ulehla announced the addition of midfielder Gabby Cuzzola (Mercersburg Academy/Erie, Pa.) to the Wolverines' 2014 recruiting class today (Tuesday, July 8), giving the Maize and Blue 12 total incoming freshmen for the 2015 season.
Cuzzola, a three-year varsity letterwinner at Mercersburg Academy, set school records in career goals assist and points, recording 175 goals and 176 assists in 52 games played during her career. The right-handed midfielder helped the Blue Storm to a combined 30-20 record, including a 12-6 mark during her junior season (2013), en route to the Independent Parochial School League (IPSL) championship. As a freshman, she competed for McDowell High School (Erie, Pa.), where she set the school single-season record for assists with 68. She was selected to the All-Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) honorable mention team following her freshman season.
In her first season at Mercersburg (2012), she led the team in ground balls, assists and draw control win percentage. Following the season, she was the youngest member to be selected to the American International Sports Team (AIST) U19 Elite Lacrosse Team. She played internationally in the United Kingdom during the summer of 2012.
She continued to lead Mercersburg in ground balls, assists and draw control win percentage for the remainder of her career, earning All-IPSL first team honors as a junior and senior after being named to the honorable mention team as a sophomore. Following her junior season, she was voted a Brine National High School All-American and was selected to lead Mercersburg as a team captain for her final season.
In addition to playing lacrosse at Mercersburg, Cuzzola also played club lacrosse for XTEAM, where she was coached by Crista Samaras, a two-time Ivy League Player of the Year at Princeton and IFWLA World Cup gold medalist. She also played three years of soccer and participated in track and field for one season. Cuzzola graduated from Mercersburg Academy as a Commended Scholar.
The 12 members of U-M's second signing class will join the 25 student-athletes from Team One for the program's second season in 2015. After competing in the American Lacrosse Conference during their inaugural season in 2014, the Wolverines will transition to the newly formed Big Ten Women's Lacrosse Conference for the 2015 campaign.
