Women's Lacrosse Student-Athlete Spotlight: Sara Beach

Dec. 11, 2012

With the U-M women's lacrosse program's first recruiting class in the books, all 28 members will now be featured in their own student-athlete spotlight, breaking down each future Wolverine, on and off the field.

Sara Beach is a two-time varsity letterwinner (2011, '12) and will play her final season at Towson High School (Towson, Md.) this spring under head coach DeeDee Franke, who is also her club lacrosse coach with the Skywalkers.

During her junior season, she helped lead the Generals to a 10-4 record and received the team's Unsung Hero award for her efforts.

She is also a four-year letterwinner in field hockey, where she received all-division, all-county and second team All-Metro honors following her senior season this fall.

Beach is a four-time Minds in Motion award recipient, given annually by the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association (MPSSAA) to students statewide that achieve a 3.25 grade-point average or above while participating in interscholastic athletics. She is also active with Towson's Yearbook Club, acting as the current sports editor.

"Sara is an extremely smart player, who quietly goes about her job on the field yet makes a distinct and noticeable impact throughout the game. Her intelligence combined with her tremendous natural instincts allows her to be extremely effective in transition and a real threat on the defensive end of the field."

What attracted you to the University of Michigan?
"The combination of challenging academics and big-time sports is what really attracted me to the University of Michigan."

What are your thoughts about being part of Michigan's first women's lacrosse team?
"I feel extremely honored to be part of the first women's lacrosse team at the University of Michigan because I know that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity."

How has it been getting to know your future Wolverine teammates?
"I've really enjoyed meeting my future teammates and getting to know them so far. I am very excited to make lasting memories with them at the University of Michigan."

What do you like about Michigan/Ann Arbor from what you've seen so far?
"So far I have seen an amazing town that is filled with pride for the University of Michigan, which makes me feel at home and supported."

What is your favorite lacrosse moment of all-time?
"My favorite lacrosse moment was in my last tournament ever playing for my club team. Our whole team played better together than we had ever played before and it was a great way to end our season."

How did you first get involved in lacrosse?
"My dad played lacrosse throughout his life and in college so I think my love of the sport was influenced by him. My brothers also grew up playing lacrosse so after watching them play, I picked up my first lacrosse stick at age six and never looked back."

Do you have any talents or hobbies that you're willing to share? If so, please explain.
"One of my hobbies is learning about marine life, so every day I try to learn about a new underwater creature."

Who is your role model, and why?
"One of my role model's is Jennifer Hudson. Not only is she talented and caring but she is very strong. In 2008 her mother, brother, and nephew were killed in a shooting yet she kept living her life to the fullest with a big smile on her face. I admire her strength and ability to enjoy life no matter what life brought her."

What do you enjoy doing when you're not playing lacrosse?
"When I'm not playing lacrosse or other sports, I enjoy spending time with my friends and exploring our area. My friends and I like to find new restaurants and activities to test out. Most recently, I've been spending most of my time going to animal shelters looking for a dog to add to my family."
