EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The seventh-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team opened the 2013 regular season with commanding victories over No. 16 Michigan State and Iowa on Saturday (March 30 at the Grande River in East Lansing, Mich. The Wolverines won all 13 races that they competed in against the Spartans and Hawkeyes, with four races that included Notre Dame.
"This was a great way to start the season," said head coach Mark Rothstein. "I am really pleased with
the effort that our team gave today and I am excited to get back to
practice on Monday. We have a great opportunity to improve our speed
in all of the boats."
Michigan swept all six head-to-head races against Michigan State in the morning session. This is believed to be the first time in school history that the Wolverines have accomplished that feat. In addition, Michigan defeated Notre Dame and Iowa in a 3V4 race.
In the afternoon, Michigan defeated Iowa in the four head-to-head races at 1V8, 2V8, 1V4 and 2V4. The Wolverines defeated the Hawkeyes and Notre Dame in the 3V4 and posted a win against the Irish in the 4V4. U-M's two freshmen novice eight boats bested the Hawkeyes in the final race of the day.
Michigan will look to continue its dominant performance next week in Columbus, Ohio. The Wolverines will compete in a tri-meet against Tennessee and Notre Dame on Saturday (April 6) at the Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River. The races will begin at 9 a.m.
