ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Led by a morning/afternoon sweep by the first varsity eight, the 10th-ranked University of Michigan women's rowing team put in another strong performance against No. 4 Virginia and No. 9 Notre Dame in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Belleville Lake this afternoon.

Rowing against previously unbeaten UVA in the morning session, Michigan's 1V8 boat - Hannah Sherman (coxswain), Jessica Eiffert, Bryna Oleshansky, Shannon Winchill, Chrissy Holm, Amanda Elmore, Emily Idoni, Tara Foley and Louisa Freeman - maintained its lead over the Cavaliers late in the race to earn the victory at 6:25.7, with a 1.5 second margin of victory.

"It was a good win for us," head coach Mark Rothstein said. "It felt like we were racing better in practice over the last week or two and it's nice to get that validation on race day."

Michigan's 2N8 roster picked up the Wolverines' other victory in the morning session in the first race of the day, edging Ohio State by 7.5 seconds with a time of 7:33.6

The Wolverines did not lose a race in the afternoon session against Notre Dame, and nearly all crews improved their times from morning races.

The 3V4 boat -- Destiny Mack (coxswain), Andrea Johnson, Emma Burke, Hannah Moscati and Allison Boss -- made the biggest jump in the afternoon session, improving its time by 10.97 seconds to earn a decisive victory at 7:32.8 against Notre Dame's 3V4 (8:03.67) and 4V4 (8:37.00) crews.

Michigan's 1V8 capped off the day with its fourth consecutive victory, defeating Notre Dame by 3.25 seconds at 6:29.0.

"Winning always helps (you get better)," Rothstein said. "You always feel better when you win, and we were able to win every race in the afternoon, so that was great. We recognize that we need to get faster, because Ohio State looked awfully good today. They're a team we're going to have to beat to win the Big Ten. We've got a lot of work but we're excited."

Michigan will host its final regular-season regatta of the spring season on May 3 at Belleville Lake, racing against Louisville and Michigan State.
