All Three U-M Boats Advance to A/B Semifinals at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan rowing team advanced to the A/B semifinals in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four races at the 2014 NCAA Championships on Friday (May 30) held at Eagle Creek Park.

The Wolverines finished second in the first heat of the 1V8 race as well as the opening heat of the 2V8 race. Michigan's first varsity four crew finished third in their morning heat but captured second place in their repechage heat to earn a slot in the A/B semifinal. All three boats will return for racing on Saturday morning (May 31) at 8:30 a.m.

The first varsity eight will row in the second A/B semifinal at 9 a.m. against Princeton, Brown, Stanford, Notre Dame and Harvard. The Wolverines' second varsity eight will compete in the second A/B semifinal at 9:40 a.m. against Stanford, Virginia, California, Southern California and Notre Dame. Michigan's 1V4 crew will race in the A/B semifinal at 10:20 a.m. against Southern California, Wisconsin, California, Washington and Indiana.

Michigan's 1V8 finished second in the opening heat of the 1V8 with a time of 6:22.099, its best mark of the spring season and sixth-fastest time in all 1V8 heats in the morning session. The Wolverines finished behind Ohio State by a boat length but well ahead of USC, San Diego and Louisville in their heat.

The 2V8 crew competed in the closest race of the morning session, as less than half a second (.367) separated the first-, second- and third-place boats. Michigan narrowly edged Washington for second place by .073 seconds, finishing behind Brown by .294 seconds.

The 1V4 crew finished in third in the morning heat at 7:23.110, then bettered its morning time by almost three seconds in the afternoon repechage. Michigan took second place in the repechage at 7:20.466, giving the Wolverines three boats in the A/B semifinals for the first time since 2012.
