INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan rowing team finished in 12th place at the 2013 NCAA Championships on Sunday (June 2) at Eagle Creek Park. The Wolverines scored 69 points at the championship, closing with a ninth-place showing in the 1V8, 12th in the 1V4 and 15th in the 2V8.
A tightly-contested first varsity eight petite final saw the Wolverines finish third in the race and ninth overall nationally. U-M clocked a time of 6:30.529, its fastest time of the NCAA competition, to place behind winner UCLA (6:26.618) and Harvard (6:27.627). Michigan edged Stanford by .247.
The Wolverines won the second heat of the C/D semifinals for the second varsity eight boat. The time of 6:53.445 was nearly three seconds better than second-place finisher Washington State. The victory pushed U-M's 2V8 into the C final for places 13-18 at the NCAAs. Michigan held the lead in the C final at the 500 and 1500m marks but finished third with a time of 6:42.016. The Wolverines placed behind Cornell (6:40.522) and Washington State (6:41.170), falling shy of the victory by 1.494 seconds. The finish placed the Michigan 15th in the 2V8 at NCAAs.
Michigan's first varsity four finished sixth in the petite finals and posted a 12th-place finish overall. The Wolverines boat trailed California, Princeton, Notre Dame, Stanford and Yale in the petite final with a time of 7:27.998. The closely bunched grouping saw the differential between the top spot and sixth place fall within 13 seconds.
