ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference Office announced today (Tuesday, April 15) that the University of Michigan rowing team earned Boat of the Week honors for the performance of the first varsity eight crew on Saturday. In a Big Ten Double Dual against Minnesota and No. 15 Wisconsin, the Wolverines' 1V8 crew won its first pair of races in the spring season.
Michigan's first varsity eight crew -- Hannah Sherman (coxswain), Amanda Elmore, Chrissy Holm, Jessica Eiffert, Bryna Oleshansky, Tara Foley, Emily Idoni, Shannon Winchell and Louisa Freeman -- earned a win against Minnesota with a time of 6:34.6 in the morning session. The 1V8 crew improved their time by more than seven seconds in the afternoon session, clocking in at 6:27.3 to defeat Wisconsin by slight open water.
The two wins helped Michigan clinch Big Ten Double Dual victories over Minnesota (48-24) and Wisconsin (42-30), including a morning sweep of all races against the Gophers.
This is the first weekly laurel for the Wolverines this season.
The Wolverines will host No. 3 Virginia and No. 9 Notre Dame next Saturday (April 19) at Belleville Lake for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, with races beginning at 9 a.m.
