ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Former University of Michigan rower Janine Hanson (2003-06) and her Canadian teammates rowed to a second-place finish in the women's eight final on Thursday (Aug. 2) to secure a silver medal at Eton Dorney.

The Canadians finished in second place with a time of 6:12.06, a little more than one second behind the gold-medal-winning American crew at 6:10.59. At the 500-meter mark, Canada sat in third place but climbed back into the silver medal position by the halfway point of the race. Despite having the fastest split among the field in the final 1,000 meters of the race, Hanson and crew were unable to catch the Americans, who had opened up nearly a three-second lead over the first 1,000 meters.

London marked the first medal for Hanson, who made her Olympic debut in 2008 in Beijing. Hanson is also a three-time member of the Canadian team at the FISA World Championships.
