ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's rowing team head coach Mark Rothstein announced the signing of eight athletes to National Letters of Intent to row for the Wolverines beginning in the 2013-14 season -- Laura Foster, Louisa Freeman, Devon Griffin, Sam Heron, Sarah Hudnall, Karla McDaniel, Kaitlin (Kate) Wright and Tessa Yurko. The incoming freshman class will include two from the state of New Jersey and one athlete each from Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota and New York, as well as one from British Columbia, Canada.
"I am truly excited about the way our incoming class for 2013 is shaping up. I am thrilled with the rowers who have signed NLIs to come to Michigan. It is a group made up of really strong athletes, high-achieving students and great people. I look forward to coaching this group and to having them join our team here at Michigan," said U-M head coach Mark Rothstein. "(Assistant coach) Annie Knill, our recruiting coordinator, along with the entire coaching staff is to be commended on the wonderful job that they have done in recruiting this incoming class."
Laura Foster (6-1, West Windsor, N.J., West Windsor Plainsboro High School South, rows for Mercer Juniors) ... Participated in the 2012 Junior National Team Selection Camp and 2011 High Performance Camp. During the 2012 Youth National Championships, she placed eighth in the Youth 4+.
Louisa Freeman (5-10, Westport, Conn., Staples High School, rows for Saugatuck Rowing Club) ... Placed second this fall in the Youth 2x in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta, amongst 39 entries. Freeman produced strong results in 2012, participating in the Youth National Championships, finishing third in the Youth 2x, the Independence Day Regatta, where she finished in first place in both the Youth 1x and 2x, and Club Nationals, placing first in the Jr. 2x and third in the Jr. 1x.
Devon Griffin (5-8, Lumberton, N.J., Bishop Eustace Preparatory School, rows for Bishop Eustace) ... Participated in the 2012 Stotesbury Cup, placing fifth place in the Varsity 8+, and rowed to a first-place finish in the 2012 Cooper Cup for Varsity 8+. She started rowing her sophomore year of high school, earning Rookie of the Year on her high school team and a varsity letter in her first year. In her second year of rowing, Griffin made the varsity eight. This fall she also won the New Jersey State championship in field hockey.
Sam Heron (5-10, Victoria, British Columbia, Claremont Secondary School, rows for Victoria City Rowing Club) ... Was selected to row for Canada at the CanAmMex Regatta, winning both the 4- and the 8+. In the 2012 Canadian National Rowing Championship, she rowed to fifth place in the 1x and for the 2012 Royal Canadian Henley placed fourth in the U19 2- and U18 4x.
Sarah Hudnall (5-11, Roswell, Ga., Roswell High School, rows for Atlanta Junior Rowing Association) ... Rowed in the 2012 Southeast Regional Championships, finishing in second place for the Jr. 8+, and participated in the 2011 Junior National Team High Performance Selection Camp.
Karla McDaniel (5-10, Tallahassee, Fla., Chiles High School, rows for Capital City Rowing) ... Participated in the 2012 Junior National Team Selection Camp, 2011 High Performance Camp and 2010 Development Camp. In the 2012 Southeast Regional Championships, she rowed to a first-place finish in the Jr. 4+ and at the 2012 Youth National Championships placed 12th in Varsity 4+.
Kaitlin (Kate) Wright (6-1, Lakeville, Minn., Lakeville High School, rows for Twin Cities) ... Stroked Twin Cities Varsity 4+ and 8+ in 2012. In her prep career, she rowed in the 2012 Head of the Charles Regatta, placing fifth in the 4+, her program's first trip to the regatta, and for the 2012 Midwest Regional Championship she finished fifth in the 4+.
Tessa Yurko (5-10, Buffalo, N.Y., Nardin Academy, Nardin Academy and rows for West Side Rowing Club) ... Participated in 2010 Junior National Team CanAmMex Selection Camp. She has raced at Head of the Charles, Midwest Regional Championships and Canadian Henley for West Side and Nardin Academy. She has also demonstrated her ability on the erg with one of the top erg scores amongst her age group.
Michigan finished second as a team at the 2012 NCAA Championships, and the Wolverines recently finished up the 2012 fall season with the Belleville Classic and are currently training indoors. They will make their way to Tampa, Fla., for the annual winter break training trip in preparation for the spring season.
