Michigan Signs Seven to National Letters of Intent for 2015-16

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan rowing head coach Mark Rothstein announced the signing of seven athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2015-16 season -- Ashley Cleary, Rachel Fanning, Kathryn Grotto, Megan Gutknecht, Caroline Hendershot, Rebecca Joyce and Shayla Lamb. The incoming freshman class will include three from the state of Connecticut, two from New York, one from Michigan, and one from Australia.

"We're really excited about this incoming class," said Rothstein. "There's a lot of rowing talent and more importantly, these are young women who are really great people, great students and a great fit for Michigan. Our coaching staff has done a great job in recruiting this class, and we're all very excited to have them on campus next fall."

Ashley Cleary (5-6, Guilderland, New York, Guilderland HS, rows for Albany Rowing Center) Finished top-25 at the CRASH-B Sprint Indoor Rowing Championship for Junior Women ... Member of Varsity Girls 4+ crew that represented Albany Rowing Center at 2014 U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships, finishing sixth ... Earned bronze medal at Northeast Championships to earn spot at U.S. Rowing Youth Nationals ... Second place at New York State Championship in Junior 8+.

Rachel Fanning (5-11, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Forest Hills Northern HS, rows for Forest Hills Northern Crew Club) One of 12 women named to the 2014 U.S. Junior World Development Team ... Placed in the top-12 at the CRASH-B Sprint Indoor Rowing Championship for Junior Women ... Helped Forest Hills Northern earn its first-ever state championship in the women's senior 4+ at the 2014 Scholastic Rowing Association of Michigan Championship Regatta.

Kathryn Grotto (5-11, Weston, Connecticut, Weston HS, rows for Saugatuck Rowing Club) Recorded top-10 finish at Head of the Charles in Junior 8+ ... Placed sixth in the Junior B event at 2014 Connecticut Indoor Rowing Championship ... Finished third in the lightweight 8+ at the 2012 Northeast Regional championships.

Meghan Gutknecht (5-7, Guilderland, New York, Guilderland HS, rows for Albany Rowing Center) Won gold medal at Canadian Henley in Under-19 women's single ... 2014 U.S. Junior World Development Team rower ... Member of Varsity Girls 4+ crew that represented Albany Rowing Center at 2014 U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships, finishing sixth ... Finished eighth in Junior Women division at 2013 World Indoor Rowing Championships.

Caroline Hendershot (5-10, Simsbury, Connecticut, Simsbury HS, rows for Simsbury HS) USRowing 2014 Junior National High Performance Team competitor; Named to USRowing Sweep Development Camp roster ... Member of First Girls Boat which won the 8+ race at the Connecticut Public Schools Rowing Association regatta and finished sixth at the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Championships ... Multi-sport varsity athlete: volleyball, indoor and outdoor track (hurdles, long jump) and rowing.

Rebecca Joyce (6-0, Hawthorn VIC, Australia, Methodist Ladies College, rows for Melbourne University Boat Club) Rowed in six seat in the Australian Junior National Team 8+ that placed fifth at the World Championship in 2014 ... Competed two years in V8+ and was a two-year Vice Captain of Boats for Methodist Ladies College ... Victorian State Champion in V8+ in 2013 ... Named to Victorian State Pathways V111 squad as one of eight rowers selected in Victoria.

Shayla Lamb (5-8, Kent, Connecticut, The Kent School, rows for Kent School Boat Club) Competed on 2014 U.S. Junior National Rowing team; Placed sixth in the 8+ at the 2014 World Junior Championship ... Placed third in the 8+ at the 2014 National Schools' Championship Regatta ... Rowed for the U.S. Junior Development team in 2013 in Banyoles, Spain.
