ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior forward Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) netted a hat trick to lead the No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Western Michigan on Tuesday (Aug. 13) at the U-M Soccer Stadium. After a scoreless first half, the Wolverines unloaded on the Broncos, outshooting the visitors, 14-0, in the second half, scoring four goals in a span of 8:50 (60:36-69:26) to blow the match open.
After a shaky first half in which they generated only one shot on goal, the Wolverines exploded in the second, starting with Ezurike in the 53rd minute. Freshman Madisson Lewis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) and senior Tori McCombs (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) combined for assists on each of the first two goals, the second coming from the foot of senior Kayla Mannino (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Avondale) in the 61st minute. McCombs crossed the ball in from the far side, and it fell to Mannino after a flick from Lewis. Mannino then bent in the shot from just inside the 18-yard box to put U-M up, 2-0.
In the 64th minute, Ezurike scored her second goal, a brilliant unassisted strike into the upper-netting from just inside the 18-yard box. A little more than 90 seconds later, senior Shelina Zadorsky (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) turned what looked to be an intended cross into a goal. She threw the ball in from the sidelines to sophomore Corinne Harris (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep), who gave the ball back to Zadorsky on the far side. Even with a difficult angle, Zadorsky sent the ball right into the side-netting from close to 30 yards out. Ezurike capped the scoring in the 70th minute with a long-range strike from 25 yards out that went top-shelf, giving U-M an insurmountable 5-0 lead with 20 minutes to play.
Freshman Taylor Bucklin (Greenwich, Conn./Brookfield) and junior Zaryn Jennings (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) combined for the shutout. Neither goalkeeper was forced to make a save, as the Michigan defense held Western Michigan to just three shots the entire contest.
Michigan returns to the field for its second exhibition on Friday (Aug. 16) against Dayton. The match will begin at 3 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Stadium.
