KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision at Western Michigan in its lone exhibition contest of 2014 on Wednesday (Aug. 13) at WMU's Soccer Complex. The game was scoreless until the 87th minute when the Broncos netted the game's only goal.
Michigan outshot WMU, 6-1, in the opening half, with all six shots coming from different players, and had two corner kick opportunities, but U-M was unable to capitalize.
The Wolverines got five more shots off in the second half, including three on target, but none found the back of the net. With four minutes remaining in regulation, Western Michigan's Emma Kahn found herself open more than 20 yards from the goal and put a shot on net that beat junior goalkeeper Maddie Clarfield (Malibu, Calif./Malibu) into the top right corner.
Junior forward Lulu Haidar (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood) and sophomore forward Nicky Waldeck (Chicago, Ill./Western Reserve Academy [OH]) led Michigan with two shots apiece, including one each on net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin (Greenwich, Conn./Brookfield) got the start in goal for the Maize and Blue, making one save in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Hinz (Eldersburg, Md. /Our Lady of Good Counsel) began the second half in net and played 30:36 for U-M, before Clarfield entered with 14:24 to play in regulation.
Overall, 21 Wolverines saw game action in the exhibition match, including six freshmen.
The Wolverines will begin the regular season on Friday, Aug. 22, when they host Cal State Northridge in a 7:30 p.m. matchup at the U-M Soccer Stadium. [ Tickets ]
