ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team got goals from sophomore Madisson Lewis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth) and freshman Taylor Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich./Pontiac Notre Dame Prep), as the Maize and Blue earned a 2-0 season-opening win over Cal State Northridge on Friday (Aug. 22) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines wasted no time notching the first goal of the 2014 season, as Lewis put the ball in the back of the net just 6:12 into the first half to give U-M the early lead. A corner kick from sophomore/freshman Ani Sarkisian (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill/Florida State) was cleared out of the box, but junior midfielder/forward Corinne Harris (Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep) dropped the ball back to Sarkisian, who played the ball back in from about 20 yards out. Lewis redirected Sarkisian's ball from the left side into the right side of the net off a header.
CSUN was on the attack for much of the first half and had its fair share of chances at the net, registering five shots, but couldn't get passed sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin (Greenwich, Conn./Brookfield).
The second half was filled with plenty of action, as Michigan ripped seven shots and CSUN recorded five of its own. Diving saves by Bucklin (76') and Madator keeper Cynthia Tafoya (59' -- shot from Sarkisian at the top of the 18) kept the score at 1-0 in favor of the Wolverines.
In the 79th minute, junior Lulu Haidar (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood) took a corner kick for U-M from the right side and found Harris in the center of the box for a quick shot. CSUN's Tafoya made the save, but was unable to secure the ball and Timko was there to clean up the rebound from about five yards out. Timko's reassurance goal came at 78:33, and the Wolverines remained in control the rest of the match to secure the 2-0 victory.
Bucklin played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves, en route to her first shutout of 2014, and 13th of her career. Michigan's back line of Timko, sophomore Anna Soccorsi (Yardley, Pa./The Pennington School [N.J.]), senior Keyana Thompson-Shaw (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Polytechnical) and junior Christina Ordonez (Elmhurst, Ill./York) also played a key role in U-M's shutout.
The Wolverines will continue their home-opening weekend when they welcome Bowling Green to U-M Soccer Stadium on Sunday (Aug. 24) for a 2 p.m. tilt. [ Tickets ]
