SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team was dealt its first loss of the season, as it fell to the San Diego Toreros, 5-0, on Friday (Aug. 29) at Torero Stadium.

San Diego outshot Michigan, 6-3, in the opening half and produced a 3-0 advantage before the break.

Less than four minutes into the match, San Diego was awarded a throw deep in Michigan's zone that led to a low-driven cross to USD's Julia Sherwood, who knocked it into the lower-right corner from just outside the six-year box.

San Diego's second goal came 21:06 into the first half as Sherwood carried the ball down the left side to the touch line and played it back to Victoria Walker, who was making a run into the six-yard box.

In the 30th minute, the Torero's dribbled down the right side into the box and played a ball that made its way to the top of the six-yard box and Mariah Butera pocketed the ball into the net as she avoided a tackle from sophomore midfielder/defender Anna Soccorsi (Yardley, Pa./The Pennington School [NJ]).

Sophomore forward Nicky Waldeck (Chicago, Ill./Western Reserve Academy [OH]) produced Michigan's best offensive opportunity in the second half in the 52nd minute, but her shot from 25 yards out sailed just wide of the upper right 90.

Two minutes later (54:04), San Diego got in behind U-M's defense, and Walker tacked on another goal, from 10 yards out. Hope Fleckner rounded out USD's scoring in the 87th minute, giving the Toreros their first win of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin (Greenwich, Conn./Brookfield) made the start and played the first half, making one save, while freshman Megan Hinz (Eldersburg, Md. /Our Lady of Good Counsel) junior Maddie Clarfield (Malibu, Calif./Malibu) split time in the second half, playing 38 and seven minutes, respectively.

The Wolverines will remain in California to face San Diego State on Sunday (Aug. 31). The match is slated for a 7 p.m. PDT start at the SDSU Sports Deck and will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network free of charge.
